To compose and harmonize the elements of art, artists follow certain principles of design. The eight principles of design are:
- Balance refers to the equal distribution of visual weight, achieved through symmetry, asymmetry, or radial symmetry.
- Contrast is the juxtaposition of different elements to create visual interest and distinction.
- Emphasis highlights certain elements within a composition to create a focal point.
- Movement refers to the illusion of motion and how the composition guides the viewer’s gaze.
- Pattern is the repetition of elements in a structured manner to create a cohesive composition.
- Rhythm refers to the regular alternation of visual elements to create movement and flow.
- Unity refers to the cohesive arrangement of elements to create visual consistency.
- Variety incorporates diverse elements to create visual interest.
Understanding how an artist uses this foundational visual vocabulary will help you read artwork in a more meaningful way.
